HYDROPROGNE
(Laridae; Ϯ Caspian Tern H. caspia) Gr. ὑδρο- hudro-  water-  < ὑδωρ hudōr, ὑδατος hudatos  water; L. progne or procne  swallow  < Gr. myth. Progne, who was metamorphosed into a swallow (see Progne); the terns were formerly known as “sea swallows” because of their forked tails and graceful flight; "2. Sterna caspia, aranea.   ...   2. Heherschwalbe. Hydroprogne.   E[ntwickelung]. Wie bei den Seeschwalben.   Ch[arakter]. Seeschwalben mit blaugrauem Gefieder, starkem und langen rothem Schnabel, Flügeln, welche mit dem wenig gegabelten Schwanz von gleicher Länge sind, und schwarzen Füßen.   L[ebensart]. Sie gleichen den Uebrigen und nähren sich von Fischen." (Kaup 1829); "Hydroprogne Kaup, Skizz. Entw.-Gesch. Eur. Thierw., 1829, p. 91.
