(Vangidae; Ϯ African Shrike-flycatcher M. flammulatus) Gr. μεγας megas great; genus Bias Lesson, 1831, shrike-flycatcher; "Genre MEGABYAS. J. et Ed. Verreaux.—Bec assez déprimé vers la base et se rétrécissant graduellement, à pointe très-crochue et échancrée aux deux mandibules, la supérieure entamant légèrement les plumes du front, garnie à sa base de plumes rigides dirigées en avant. Ailes assez longues; la quatrième rémige la plus longues de toutes. Queue carrée. Tarses courts, à talon nu, de la même longueur que le doigt du milieu; les ongles moyens, peu crochus. 1. Megabyas flammulata. ... Ce oiseau se rapproche du genre Byas de Lesson; cependant son bec, graduellement rétréci et ses tarses ainsi que les doigts plus longs, l'en distinguent nettement. ... Sa nourriture principale consiste en insectes, et plus spécialement en moucherons, qui abondent dans les localités humides qu'elle fréquente. C'est encore une espèce qui émigre et qui vit solitaire; aussi son naturel est-il très-farouche." (J. & E. Verreaux 1855). Some authors suggest that this genus, together with Tephrodornis, Bias, and Hemipus, be separated in a new family, Tephrodornithidae.
