DEFINITIONS
DAPTION
(Procellariidae; † Pintado Petrel D. capensis) Anagram of Portuguese word pintado pied, spotted, given to the Pintado Petrel by early navigators with reference to its piebald plumage < L. pictus painted < pingere to paint; "DAPTION. PINTADO. Generic Character. Rostrum subgracile, capite brevior, ad apicem haud dilatatum; mandibula superiore adunca, inferiore recta, truncata. Nares tubulatæ. Pedes mediocres; unguis posticus loco pollice. ... THE Pintados appear to form a genus distinct from the rest of the Petrels, inasmuch as the beak is more slender and rather shorter than the head, than in the Fulmars, and the tip of the under mandible is not bent down as in the true Petrels and in the Shearwaters; again, from the Prions they are distinguished by the beak not being depressed and armed at its edges with slight denticulations, and from the Halodromes by possessing the rudiments of a hinder toe which is furnished with a claw, of which those birds are destitute. ... It may be observed that I have introduced several new genera into the arrangement of the Natatorial Birds, in spite of the prejudices that are so predominant, both in this country and on the Continent, against the adoption of any that are not to be found in the works of Linné or his immediate followers ... CAPE PINTADO. (Daption Capenses.) DA. albo fuscoque varium. ... THIS, which forms the type of the genus, is fourteen inches in length" (Stephens 1826); "Daption Stephens, in Shaw's Gen. Zool. vol. xiii. pt. 1, p. 239, Feb. 18th, 1826. Type (by original designation): P. capensis Linné." (Mathews, 1927, Syst. Av. Austral., I, p. 125).
Var. Daptes (Gr. δαπτης daptēs eater < δαπτω daptō to devour), Daptium, Daptrion.
Synon. Calopetes, Petrella.
