(Semnornithidae; Ϯ Toucan Barbet S. ramphastinus) Gr. σεμνος semnos solemn, noble; ορνις ornis, ορνιθος ornithos bird; "Pan (Richm. 1899, vice Tetragonops, preoccupied) being preëmpted (Oken, Mamm. 1816), as I am informed by Dr. T. S. Palmer, the genus of Barbets formerly known as Tetragonops may be called Semnornis,1 with S. rhamphastinus (Jard.) as the type. Semnornis frantzii (Scl.) of Costa Rica, is the only other species at present known. ...1 Σεμνος, solemn; ορνις, bird" (Richmond 1900). The imposing Toucan Barbet is a widely sought cage-bird confined to Colombia and Ecuador.
