DEFINITIONS
EUTRIORCHIS
(Accipitridae; Ϯ Madagascar Serpent Eagle E. astur) Gr. ευ eu fine, another; τριορχης triorkhēs buzzard < τρεις treis, τρια tria three; ορχις orkhis testicle (see Triorchis); "EUTRIORCHIS, gen. nov. Belongs to the group of bare-legged Eagles, and is closely allied to Spilornis and to Dryotriorchis, more particularly to the last, as might have been expected. It differs principally in having a full and rounded crest, all the plumes being rounded and not lanceolate; and it is unlike any of the other Harrier-Eagles in the extreme shortness of the wing, while the tail is inordinately long and equals the wing in dimensions. Just as Urotriorchis macrourus is the longest-tailed form of Goshawk yet known, so Eutriorchis is the longest-tailed Harrier-Eagle yet discovered. From Spilornis, which it resembles in the fulness and form of its crest, it differs in the length of tail and in its feathered lores. The type is EUTRIORCHIS ASTUR, sp. n. ... This new species has been discovered by Mr. Crossley in the southern portion of Madagascar. The affinities of the genus have been indicated above; and I have only to add that its general coloration resembles that of a Goshawk, and suggested the specific name to me." (Sharpe 1875); "Eutriorchis Sharpe, Proc. Zool. Soc. 1875, p. 73. Type by original designation, Eutriorchis astur Sharpe." (W. Sclater, 1924, Syst. Av. Aethiop., I, p. 63).
astur
Genus Astur de Lacépède, 1799, goshawk.
● "36. ACCIPITER Astur. ... Accipiter palumbarius Auctorum. ... Nobilissima in hoc genere avis, per omnen Rossiam et Sibiriam frequens est, etiam in maxime borealibus, unde tamen urgente bruma decedit, contra in temperatioribus tota hyeme praesens, tum venatione Tetraonem vivens, tum circa pagos praedabundus et Columbis maxime infestus." (Pallas 1831) (syn. Accipiter gentilis).
● "I have only to add that its general coloration resembles that of a Goshawk, and suggested the specific name to me." (Sharpe 1875) (Eutriorchis).
Astur
(Accipitridae; syn. Accipiter † Northern Goshawk A. gentilis) L. astur, asturis hawk < Gr. αστεριας asterias hawk < αστηρ astēr, αστερος asteros star (cf. Med. L. austurcus, asturcius or asturcus goshawk). "16. AUTOUR, Astur. { Bec crochu à l'extrémité; la tête plate en dessus, et garnie de plumes; la base du bec recouverte d'une cire; les ailes courtes; la première penne de l'aile, très-courte; le tarse long." (de Lacépède 1799); "Astur Lacépède, Tabl. Ois. p. 4, 1799. Type by subsequent designation (Vigors, Zool. Journ. i, p. 326, 1824), Falco palumbarius Linn. = F. gentilis Linn." (W. Sclater, 1924, Syst. Av. Aethiop., I, p. 69); "Astur Lacepède, Tabl. Ois., p. 4, 1799. Species added by Daudin in Hist. Nat. Buffon ed. Didot, Quadr. vol. xiv. p, 219, (1799=) Oct. 1802. Type (by tautonymy): Falco palumbarius L. = F. gentilis L." (Mathews, 1927, Syst. Av. Austral., I, p. 238); "Astur Lacépède, Tabl. Meth. Ois., p. 4, 1799—type, by subs. desig. (Vigors, Zool. Journ., 1, p. 326, 1824), Falco palumbarius Linnaeus = Falco nisus Linnaeus." (Hellmayr and Conover, 1949, Cat. Birds Americas, Pt. I (4), p. 48). The Northern Goshawk and other related large hawks are now considered to be closer to Circus.
