(Laridae; Ϯ Large-billed Tern P. simplex) Gr. myth. Phaëtusa, daughter of Phoebus and Clymene, and sister to Phaëthon; "9. Genus Phaetusa, Wagl. Phaetusa. (Gen. nov.) Rostrum (Phaetontis) validum subarcuatum versus basin subabrupte incrassatum, apice acutissimo; ptilosis frontis recto-, capistri-, obliquo-terminata, versus nares omnino non extensa; alae elongatae caudae basin transcendentes; cauda breviuscula subfurcata; hallux interno-transversalis, basi cum tarsi fine membrana minime connexus. Color praedominans: notaeum canum; pileus niger; remiges nigrae; rostrum et pedes flavo-virescentia. Species: Ph. magnirostris (Sterna magnirostris Lichtenst., Spix. t. 104.)"
