SPHENOPSIS
(Thraupidae; Ϯ Oleaginous Hemispingus S. frontalis ignobilis) Gr. σφην sphēn, σφηνος sphēnos  wedge; οψις opsis  appearance; "Sphenopsis, genus novum ex familia Dendrocolaptidarum, affine Philydori et ejusmodi formis plerumque Anabatis dictis.  ...  Typ. et sp. unica S. ignobilis, sp. nov.  ...  It is remarkable for the short, straight, conical bill, in which it differs from all the allied species that I am acquainted with" (P. Sclater 1861); Sclater believed his single imperfect specimen to be a furnarid allied to Philydor.

Similar to Hemispingus frontalis hanieli Hellmayr and Seilern of the Subtropical Zone of north-central Venezuela but more yellow throughout, the upperparts greener" (Chapman 1929) (subsp.
