GEOTHLYPIS
(Parulidae; † Common Yellowthroat G. trichas) Gr. γεω- geō- ground-, earth- < γη gē earth; θλυπις thlupis unknown small bird, perhaps some sort of finch or warbler. In ornithology thlypis signifies either a thin-billed tanager or, as in this case, a parulid warbler; "Subfam. Sylvicolinae. 1. Geothlypis (Trichas Sws. nec Gloger). ... Gen. Trichas Gloger. Der Name Trichas wurde von Gloger im März 1827 an die Stelle von Criniger (!) Temm. gesetzt. Trichophorus Temm. ist später als Trichas Gloger vorgeschlagen. Für die Gattung Trichas Sws., April 1827 haben wir den Namen Geothlypis (Fam. Sylvicolidae) vorgeschlagen 1. Trichas barbata (Temm.). 2. T. gularis (Horsf.). 3. T. icterica (Strickl.). 4. T. flaveola (Gould). etc." (Cabanis 1847); "Geothlypis Cabanis, 1847, Archiv für Naturgesch., 13, pp. 316, 349.
