(Tyrannidae; Ϯ Bearded Tachuri P. pectoralis) Gr. πολυστικτος polustiktos much spotted < πολυς polus much; στικτος stiktos spotted < στιζω stizō to tattoo. Reichenbach's 1850, plate LXVII, labelled Muscicapinae: Muscipetinae & Platyrhynchinae, shows a variety of flycatchers, including this bird with a heavily streaked head and face. "Polystictus Reichenbach, 1850, Avium Syst. Nat., pl. 67. Type, by subsequent designation (G. R. Gray, 1855, Cat. Genera Subgenera Birds, p. 54), "Platyrhynchus minimus Gould" = Pachyramphus minimus Darwin = Sylvia pectoralis Vieillot." (Traylor in Peters 1979, VIII, 49-50).
