(Phasianidae; † Satyr Tragopan T. satyra) L. tragopan, tragopanis fabulous, horned purple-headed bird mentioned by Pliny and Pomponius Mela < Gr. τραγοπαν tragopan, τραγοπανος tragopanos unknown large Ethiopian bird, perhaps a hornbill; "LE TRAGOPAN. (TRAGOPAN, Cuv.) Est l'un des oiseaux dont la tête est, dans le mâle, le plus bizarrement ornée. Presque nue, elle a derrière chaque œil une petite corne grêle; sous la gorge est un fanon susceptible d'extension. Ses tarses ont des éperons courts dans les deux sexes. On n'en connaît qu'une espèce, originaire du nord de l'Inde, (le Nepaul ou Faisan cornu, Buff.; Penelope satyra, Gm.; Meleagris satyrus, Lath.) Edw., 116; Vieill., Gal., 206, de la taille du coq, d'un rouge éclatant semé de petites larmes blanches. La femelle et le jeune sont de différents bruns."
