(Scolopacidae; Ϯ Jack Snipe L. minimus) Gr. λιμνη limnē marsh; κρυπτης kruptēs hider, spy (originally a member of the Spartan secret service) < κρυπτευω krupteuō to lie concealed; "Lymnocryptes gallinula. Die kleine Bessassine, ist in den moorigten Sümpfen ohnweit jener Hauptstadt zur Brütezeit sehr häufig" (Boie 1826); "1. Scolopax gallinula. ... Schnepfchen. Lymnocryptes. (Scolopax gallinula). E[ntwickelung]. Wie gewöhnlich. Ch[arakter]. Schnepfen mit 12 federigem Schwanz, ungebändertem Bauch, gestreiftem Kopf, und Füßen, welche nicht bis zur Ferze befiedert sind. L[ebensart].
