(Picidae; Ϯ Great Spotted Woodpecker D. major) Gr. δενδρον dendron tree; κοπος kopos striking < κοπτω koptō to strike; "II. Gattung. Baumpicker. Dendrocopos. (Tab. 1. A. Fig. 2.) Schnabel: Gerade, keilförmig; der Rücken scharfkantig, dessen Seiten ein geradflächiges Dach bildend. Nasenlöcher: Länglich, von der Dachfläche überwachsen, ganz bedeckt. Zunge: Wie bei der vorhergehenden Art, aber mit vielen Widerhäkchen an der Seiten versehen; die wurmförmige Röhre kaum länger als der Schnabel. Die Körperbildung, Lebensart und den Bau der Füße haben sie ganz mit den Spechten gemein. Vier Arten. 4. Großer Baumpicker. Dendrocopos major. ... 5. Mittlerer Baumpicker. Dendrocopos medius. ... 6.
