DEFINITIONS

DENDROCOPOS
(Picidae; Ϯ Great Spotted Woodpecker D. major) Gr. δενδρον dendron  tree; κοπος kopos  striking  < κοπτω koptō  to strike; "II. Gattung.  Baumpicker.  Dendrocopos.  (Tab. 1. A. Fig. 2.)  Schnabel: Gerade, keilförmig; der Rücken scharfkantig, dessen Seiten ein geradflächiges Dach bildend.  Nasenlöcher: Länglich, von der Dachfläche überwachsen, ganz bedeckt.  Zunge: Wie bei der vorhergehenden Art, aber mit vielen Widerhäkchen an der Seiten versehen; die wurmförmige Röhre kaum länger als der Schnabel.  Die Körperbildung, Lebensart und den Bau der Füße haben sie ganz mit den Spechten gemein.  Vier Arten.    4.
