Although the Malabar Pied Hornbill was selected as type species, plate XLIX of Reichenbach 1849 clearly shows the black casque markings of a Sunda Pied Hornbill A. albirostris convexus; however, Steven Gregory in litt., has pointed out that Reichenbach's plates are considered "generic details" only, and that the specific identification of the bird illustrated is not germane to the application of ICZN art. 69.3, Type species by subsequent monotypy; "Anthracoceros Reichenbach, Av. Syst. Nat. [1849], pl. XLIX. No species; generic details only. Type, by subsequent designation, Buceros malabaricus Gmelin. (Elliot, Monogr. Bucerot., pt. 10, 1882, p. xvi [= intro., p. xvi of volume]). Not Anthracocera Agassiz, 1846, Lepidoptera." (Peters, 1945, V, 266); "ANTHRACOCEROS Reichenbach, 1849 M—Buceros monoceros Shaw, 1811; type by subsequent monotypy (G. R. Gray, 1855, Cat. of the Genera and Subgenera of Birds, p. 83). = Buceros coronatus Boddaert, 1783" (Dickinson and Remsen (eds.), H. & M.
