(Strigopidae; Ϯ Kaka N. meridionalis) Specific name Psittacus nestor Latham 1790 (= syn. Nestor meridionalis), from the grizzle-capped appearance of the Kaka (see nestor); "VIII.e Sous-genre. NESTOR; Nestor. Bec très-long, très-haut; la mandibule supérieure du double plus longue que l'inférieure, à arête disposée en courbe alongée, très-comprimée, mince et sillonnée sur ses côtés; mandibule inférieure alongée, mince, taillée en biseau en avant; narines basales, ouvertes, étroites, latérales; tarses médiocres, alongés, très-réticulés; queue médiocre, égale. 30. NESTOR DE LA NOUVELLE-ZÉLANDE; Nestor Novæ Zelandiæ: Psittacus Nestor, Kuhl. ... Habite la Nouvelle-Zélande, où les naturels le nomment kaka. Il apprend aisément à parler et devient très-familier. Cet oiseau saute en marchant et n'a point les allures des autres perroquets." (Lesson 1830); "Nestor Lesson, Traité d'Orn., livr. 3, 1830, p. 190. Type, by monotypy and tautonymy, Nestor novaezelandiae Lesson = Psittacus nestor Latham = Psittacus meridionalis Gmelin." (Peters 1937, III, 142). Recent work suggests that this genus should be separated in a new family, Nestoridae.
