(Otididae; Ϯ Great Bustard O. tarda) L. otis, otidis bustard < Gr. ωτις ōtis, ωτιδος ōtidos bustard with long ear feathers; no Palaearctic bustard has ‘ear feathers,’ but this bird has been identified with the prominently moustached or ‘whiskered’ Great Bustard ("Tarda. 1. O. jugulo utrinque cristato." (Linnaeus 1758)); "85. OTIS. Rostrum mandibula superiore fornicata. Lingua bifida. Pedes tridactyli absque postico." (Linnaeus 1758); "Otis Linné, Syst. Nat., ed. 10, 1, 1758, p. 154. Type, by subsequent designation, Otis tarda Linné. (Gray, List Gen. Birds, 1840, p. 64.)" (Peters 1934, II, 217). Linnaeus's Otis comprised four species (O. Tarda, O. arabs, O. Tetrax, O. afra) (see rhaad).
