RAMPHOCELUS mandibula inferiore posterius convexa, ruber nitidissimus, cauda nigra, alis nigro fuscescentibus (mas); — supra viridescens, infra viridi flavescens (fœmina); — supra rubescente fuscus (mas junior.) ... Le mâle adulte ressemble beaucoup, par ses couleurs, au Tangara du Mississipi et au Tangara du Canada; mais il en diffère évidemment par son bec, dont la mandibule inférieure est renflée postérieurement, à peu près comme dans celui du Ramphocèle bec-d’argent. RAMPHOCÈLE d'un pourpre obscur, mandibule infèrieure dilatée, aplatie et argentée postérieurement, front, gorge et poitrine d'un pourpre très brillant (mâle) ... Ce bec, assez fort à la basse et légèrement crochu vers l’extrémité, ressemble beaucoup au bec du Scarlatte: comme dans celui-ci, la mandibule infèrieure est prolongée postérieure-ment et de chaque côté jusque sous les yeux; mais au lieu d’être convexe et renflée comme dans ce dernier oiseau, elle y forme au contraire une plaque ovale et peu épaisse. Cette plaque est recouverte d’une pellicule mince qui lui donne un aspect argenté assez brillant, sur-tout lorsque l’oiseau est vivant. Ce caractère, pris dans la forme de la mandibule inférieure, doit faire ranger naturellement le Bec-d’Argent parmi les Tangaras de Gmelin, auxquels nous avons donné le nom de Ramphocèles, en proposant d’en faire un genre particulier.” (Desmarest 1805); "Ramphocelus Desmarest, 1805, Hist.
