Gr. ἡλιος hēlios sun; συλαω sulaō to carry off, to steal; ex “Héron Phaëthon” of Lesson 1826. Gr. myth Phaëthon, vainglorious son of Phoebus, who importuned his father to drive the chariot of the sun. However, the task proved beyond him and, being unable to control the fiery steeds, the chariot careered from its chosen path, causing universal darkness and natural catastrophes. In dire retribution the unfortunate Phaëthon was struck down by a thunderbolt! (Zonerodius).
