DEFINITIONS

CALYPTURA
(Tyrannidae; Ϯ Kinglet Calyptura C. cristata) Gr. καλυπτω kaluptō  to cover; ουρα oura  tail; "Sub-genus, CALYPTURA Ϯ  (Generis Pipræ.)   ...   Bill as in Pardalotus. Wings rounded, the first and second quills slightly graduated. Tail very short, divaricated, almost concealed. Tarsi long, very slender. Feet syndactyle.  Type.— Pardalotus cristatus, VIEILL.   ...   Ϯ Th. καλυπτω velo, et ουρα cauda" (Swainson 1831);  "Calyptura Swainson, in Swainson and Richardson, 1832, Fauna Bor.-Amer., 2, p. 491.  Type, by original designation, Pardalotus cristatus Vieillot." (Snow in Peters, 1979, VIII, p. 293).  Treated as a manakin Pipridae by Swainson, but for long considered to be a cotinga Cotingidae, the recently rediscovered Kinglet Calyptura is now thought to be allied to Platyrinchus and Neopipo.

L. cristatus  crested, plumed, tufted  < crista  crest, plume, tuft. This epithet refers not only to obvious coronal crests of various shapes and sizes, but also to frontal knobs, ear tufts, and upstanding rictal bristles or feathers.
