SIRYSTES
(Tyrannidae; Ϯ Sibilant Sirystes S. sibilator) Gr. συριστης suristēs piper < συριζω surizō to play the pipes < συριγξ surinx, συριγγος suringos shepherd's pipe; "Gen. SIRYSTES **) nov. gen. — Pitador. 249. 1. M. sibilator ***) Nob. Pitador Azar. Apunt. no. 191. — Muscicapa sibilator Vieill. N. D. XXI. p. 457. — Id. Enc. p. 831. — Muscicapa sibilans Licht. Bras. II. p. 472. ... **) Σιρυστης — sibilator, von σιρυζω (zischen). Während bei dieser eigenthümlichen Form die mässig langen, unverengten Schwingen noch an die kleineren Arten von Myiarchus erinnern, deutet der weniger breit gedrückte, gewölbtere Schnabel schon mehr auf die echten Tyrannen hin. Characteristisch ist besonders für diese Gattung die haubenartige Verlängerung der Kopffedern." (Cabanis & Heine 1859); "Sirystes Cabanis and Heine, 1859, Mus. Heineanum, 2, p. 75. Type, by monotypy, Muscicapa sibilator Vieillot." (Traylor in Peters 1979, VIII, 193).
Var. Syristes.
