Synallaxis patagonica d'Orbigny, 1839. ... Etymology. The generic name, from the Greek pseudo (false) and asthenes (insignificant, strengthless), denotes the outward resemblance of species of this genus to species of Asthenes but highlights the fact that they are not closely related. The name is feminine in gender" (Derryberry et al. 2010).

Den Systematikern hat von jeher die Stellung des röthlichen Sängers Schwierigkeiten gemacht. Die Lebensweise und die äussere Erscheinung im Freien stellt denselben als Bindeglied der Erdsänger (Humicola) und der Rohrsänger (Calamoherpe) in folgender Reihenfolge: Luscinia, Aëdon, Cettia, Cisticola. Graf von der Mühle zählt ihn zu den Erdsängern und giebt in der Monographie der Sylvien p. 22 ausser anderen Kennzeichen dieser Gruppe auch an" (von Homeyer 1864).; "Humicola von Homeyer, 1864, Journal für Ornithologie, XII (71), p. 321. Both von der Mühle, especially, and von Homeyer indicate a group or section of small chats, now named under various genera, rather than the Rufous-tailed Scrub Robin Cercotrichas galactotes specifically" (JAJ 2021).
