(Bucerotidae; Ϯ Sulawesi Hornbill R. exarhatus) Gr. ῥαβδωτος rhabdōtos  striped  < ῥαβδος rhabdos  streak; ῥις rhis, ῥινος rhinos  nose; "32. Rhabdotorrhinus exaratus (Temm.)  ...  Wir haben dieser Art einen neuen Gattungsnamen gegeben; die Gründe dafür werden wir in unserem in Vorbreitung begriffenen Werke über die Vögel der Celébes-Region darlegen" (Meyer & Wiglesworth 1895); "Rhabdotorrhinus Meyer and Wiglesworth, Bds. Celebes, 1, 1898, p. xi, p. 235. Type, by monotypy, Buceros exharatus Temminck." (Peters 1945, V, 262). The Celebes or Sulawesi Hornbill and its congeners were formerly included in Penelopides and in Cranobrontes.
