Differs from Ampelornis in numerous morphometric measures and proportions such as tail/wing length ratio; differences in foraging behavior supportive. Nest architecture differs from Sipia.  Etymology. The feminine generic name is taken from the Greek polios (ashy-gray) and kranion (skull, head), reflecting the gray head of the type species" (Isler et al. 2013).
