Synallaxis patagonica d'Orbigny, 1839. ... Etymology. The generic name, from the Greek pseudo (false) and asthenes (insignificant, strengthless), denotes the outward resemblance of species of this genus to species of Asthenes but highlights the fact that they are not closely related. The name is feminine in gender" (Derryberry et al. 2010).
